Intro

As part of my game design course, in the Asset Design module, we were tasked with creating an original centre piece 3D asset for an environment which we would also create. We were given a list of themes and sub-themes and had to pick one out of each to help influence the creation of our asset and environment. Initially I had planned on choosing the Sci-Fi / Corruption themes to make something along the lines of a space ship, abandoned and infested with a living alien virus, the centre piece in which case could have been a a large pulsating alien heart at the centre of the spaceship or a large cracked culture vat, the origin of the breach. I decided against this idea as I figured a corrupted abandoned spaceship would not be the most original piece and in addition to this my general knowledge of 3D modelling is not the best and I’m not sure I would be able to model such an asset well enough and in time.

I chose the Fantasy / Family themes as I had an interesting idea for what the asset and environment could be, I planned on making a medieval-style house, home to a family of adventurers with the centre piece being an heirloom of the family, a piece of magical equipment or some kind of artefact. Upon deciding this I began browsing the internet for inspiration after which I decided upon creating a helmet for the family heirloom. I gathered a few pictures for a mood board and began sketching some really quick outline ideas in photoshop.

Some of the very rough sketches I drew to decide upon the rough shape of the asset.

Once I was happy with the general outline of the helmet, I redrew a few more sketches making a few small adjustments and ended up with the following sketch. I felt the golden ‘wings’ helped sell the fantasy theme along with the red stone in the centre of the helm which made it feel appropriately magical. Along with the helm itself, I wanted to include a sort of pedestal or stand for the final asset however I still wasn’t too sure if I would use the stand in the final environment piece or not.

A second sketch of the potential asset in colour.
