Week 9 – Animation Part 1

Intro

This week we were introduced to the principles of 2D animation and introduced to sprite sheet animation in the lab session. I gained an understanding of the typical workflow behind making an animation and techniques animators use to make their animations look more lively and appealing.

The ‘Pose to Pose’ technique is particularly useful for creating animations that are regular and allow you to fully control and define the subject’s movement over a specific time. As you begin the drawing with the most vital keyframes, animating by inserting more keyframes between them.

‘Squash and Stretch’ involves having an object stretch it’s volume to mimic forces acting on it. It helps create a dynamic feeling of flexibility, form and life.

Following the lab session I decided to go back and do some more research on animation. I then went back and animated the sprites for my platformer game

My Sprite-Sheets

Flag blowing in the wind
Idle cat animation
Running cat animation
Fish pick-up
Spinning saw blade

Conclusion

Using my new knowledge of sprite sheet animation I also made a little gif using a character of mine I had previously created. In this animation I wanted to put particular emphasis on timing and to build up a sense of anticipation.

I will definitely look to put some more time into researching animation as a whole in the near future as even just the six techniques we were taught this week already improved my animation skills significantly.
